“A new liquor store should not be allowed to open in Elmont, New York.”
Elmont residents are circulating an online petition demanding that the New York State Liquor Authority (SLA) deny a new application for a liquor license and store opening at 1560 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.
According to the petition, the proposed liquor store location is within 120 feet of the widely-used Elmont Memorial Library, causing safety and quality of life concerns.
“This is a residential area and we don’t want a liquor store near our homes and our beloved Library,” the letter to the SLA reads. “It brings our property value down and brings unwanted traffic, security issues, excess noise, and trash.”
The proposed liquor store location is the site of the former Labelle Furniture Gallery, now closed. Residents argue that the neighborhood is already oversaturated with four liquor stores and that a fifth would further pose an immediate threat to the Elmont community’s most vulnerable — its children.
“So many of the young children in our community use the Elmont Memorial Library and athletic field next to it on a daily basis…Our children’s lives and future are at stake.”
Residents are calling for the liquor store application to be denied in its entirety.
