In a recent newsletter cycle, Town of Hempstead elected officials unveiled new plans to improve the look and functionality of parts of Elmont, including upgrades to its main roads and parks. The capital projects are the latest efforts by the Town to make Elmont look better and work better for all.

Beautifying Downtown Elmont
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman James Darcy are pleased pleased to announce more enhancements coming soon to the heart of Elmont’s bustling business district.
Beginning in the spring of 2015, crews are expected to start work on two Hempstead Town streetscape beautification projects along the Hempstead Turnpike, the project will take place between Savoy Avenue and Holland Avenue. On the north side of Hempstead Turnpike, streetscape upgrades will be completed between Belmont Boulevard and Westgate.
“Enhancing our local downtowns is a key to boosting the economy and enhancing quality of life in neighborhoods across our township,” Murray said.
The streetscape projects feature the installation of brick-paved walkways, Victorian streetlights, attractive benches, new concrete and decorative trash receptacles. These two projects will complement the town’s existing revitalization projects at Elmont’s business district, which include beautification along Hempstead Turnpike (near the fire department headquarters), School Road, Elmont Road and Plainfield Avenue.
“The streetscape projects will be a welcomed addition to our ongoing revitalization efforts in Elmont downtown,” Darcy said. “We’ll continue to work together to enhance the downtown of our ‘gateway’ community,” Murray concluded.
Building Better Parks in Elmont
The Elmont community is home to some of the finest parks in the Town of Hempstead, and a series of facility improvements orchestrated by Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilmen James Darcy and Edward Ambrosino will maintain the quality and safety of local parks for generations to come.
At Averill Boulevard Park, last summer’s new pool liner installation has been followed up with the completion of new handicapped accessible bathrooms and the construction of a brand new soccer field.
The soccer field, which is used by local youth organizations was re-contoured to provide a level playing field and better drainage. A new state-of-the-art sprinkler system was installed, and when work is complete in the spring, new sod will be laid in place to provide an attractive and safe playing surface. The work is being done by the renowned LandTek Company of Amityville, which has installed grass and turf fields across the county, including MetLife Stadium where the Jets and Giants play. The cost of the field project is approximately $310,000.
At Elmont Road Park, a $2 million land bank stabilization project will soon commence to fortify sections of the park perimeter that abut private homes. Work will entail the construction of retaining walls, installation of geo tech grids and the introduction of trees, shrubs and moss, all intended to fortify and stabilize the park perimeter, which has deteriorated and shifted through the years. The work is set to begin this winter with all phases completed within the year.
